The People’s Republic of China has released a 12-point “peace plan” calling for a cease fire in the Ukraine war.
The plan’s aim was for an immediate end to the conflict, by calling for a return to peaceful dialogues. This outlined 12 major points needed to end the war.
The 12 points had included respecting the sovereignty of all countries, abandoning the Cold War mentality, immediately ceasing hostilities, resuming peace talks, resolving the humanitarian crisis, protecting all civilians and prisoners of war, keeping nuclear plants safe, reducing strategic risks, facilitating grain exports, stopping unilateral sanctions, keeping all industrial and supply chains stable, and promoting post-conflict reconstruction.
“All parties must stay rational and exercise restraint, avoid fanning the flames and aggravating tensions, and prevent the crisis from deteriorating further or even spiraling out of control,” the paper stated. ”All parties should support Russia and Ukraine in working in the same direction and resuming direct dialogue as quickly as possible, so as to gradually deescalate the situation and ultimately reach a comprehensive ceasefire.”
One major complaint of the paper is the influence of military alliances around the globe, which it said pits nations against each other.
“The security of a country should not be pursued at the expense of others. The security of a region should not be achieved by strengthening or expanding military blocs. The legitimate security interests and concerns of all countries must be taken seriously and addressed properly. There is no simple solution to a complex issue. The international community should stay committed to the right approach of promoting talks for peace, help parties to the conflict open the door to a political settlement as soon as possible, and create conditions and platforms for the resumption of negotiation.”
Along with the new proposal, China has pledged itself to a constructive role in peace negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has praised China as their key ally by saying that their relationship is important to “stabilizing the international situation.” He has also said that the two nations have agreed to a meeting in Moscow. Reportedly, the meeting between him and Chinese President Xi Jinping could happen by April.
“We await a visit of the President of the People’s Republic of China to Russia, we have agreed on this,” Putin said to Reuters. “Everything is progressing, developing. We are reaching new frontiers.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has commented on the situation by saying that China needs to actually take action if they really want peace.
“China has shown its thoughts,” he said. “I believe that the fact that China started talking about Ukraine is not bad. But the question is what follows the words. The question is in the steps and where they will lead to.”
The Ukrainian president went on to explain that there were certain things that they stated that he agreed with, and some that he did not. However, he did not go into any further details about the 12 points.
